The Lancashire Gujarat Health Users' Forum is based at the Gujarat
Hindu Society in Preston and is supported by Preston Primary Care
Trust. First established in October 2001, it organises a series of Health
Mela events, which are attended by the following agencies and health
care providers:
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals
NHS Trusts
Preston Primary Care Trust
Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust
Coronary Heart Disease Unit
Specialists in diabetes, arthritis, physiotherapy, occupational health
Breast Cancer Services
Heartbeat
Making Space
Red Cross
National Childbirth Trust
Disability Information Service Centre (DISC)
... and many others.
In addition, the Forum is also supported by practitioners
of alternative medicine, who provide workshops and seminars on subjects
such as reflexology, holistic living, aerobics, yoga and meditation.
The Health Melas
are intended to be informative and fun, with events and attractions for
all the family.
The Lancashire Health users Forum recognises the Health
Mela as a resource for the continual improvement in health awareness and
sustainability of its local community. It has strengthened partnerships
and alliances with community professionals, and has allowed more integration
of a positive approach towards health education, and an improved understanding
of services offered by the health service.
This generates a positive climate that influences how
the community forms relationships, makes decisions and develops its values
and attitudes. Healthy, well-educated people can help to reduce inequalities
in society, thus contributing to the health and wealth of the population
at large. It also allows the community to get active in improving the
quality of life style.
